Ruby Mae Simmonds, 97 passed away peacefully on Monday, August 13, 2018. She was born in Carthage, Texas to Doc Raymond and Dora Smith. She married Clifton Methvin and they had three children, Betty, Patricia and Bob. In 1951, 3 years after the death of Clifton, she married M. A. (Mel) Simmonds whom she met when he was the pastor of a church near their home. Their blended family included Mel's children, Vester, Verda and Melva. In 1961 the family moved to the new home they built themselves near Griffin Creek School where Ruby lived until one month before her death. Ruby loved working in her garden, playing cards, dice games and Keno. She was a wonderful cook and her Texas roots meant everyone who came to visit had to have something to eat or drink. She also loved the Lord and old time gospel hymns. But most of all Ruby loved fishing with Mel, the kids and grandkids. She was a woman who believed in working for what she needed. Her many jobs included being a welder in a shipyard during WWII, packing pears at SOS, cooking at the Rogue Valley Manor when it first opened and working for many years at Harry and David. She was preceded in death by her husband, 2 daughters, her stepson, a grandson and her siblings. She is survived by her son, Bob Methvin (Judy), stepdaughters Verda Morrison and Melva Martin (Cliff) and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Ruby was loving, sometimes stubborn, a big worrier, a saver of all things, never wanted to be a burden and was strong to the end. The family would like to thank her caring and generous neighbors, caregivers and others who provided love and support during her last years allowing her to have her wish - to stay in her own home as long as possible.
