Paul Michael Wrede

Paul Michael “Mick” Wrede, age 90, longtime resident of Phoenix, OR, passed away on May 25, 2023, at Kinsington Oak Grove in Medford, OR, with his son at his side.

He was born October 6, 1932, in David City, Nebraska, to parents Carl and Ella (Paul) Wrede, and was raised from an early age in Hollywood, Calif. He graduated high school from Black Foxe Military Academy, where he and his brother, Tom, received football scholarships.

“Mick” next attended the University of California-Davis for 1 1/2 years, competing in track and football, and played with the Cal Aggies in the 1952 Pear Bowl at Medford, OR. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

In 1952, Michael enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. He was a jet-engine inspector at the Air Force rocket training base in Yuma, Ariz., and was discharged in October, 1956.

On February 11, 1956, he married Nannette Furry of Phoenix, OR., after which were born daughter, Cheryl, and son, Richard.

Michael for 40 years was manager/part owner of Norton Lumber Company in Phoenix. He was active in the Boy Scouts, the Phoenix Lions Club, and the Ashland Elks Club. He was a member and president of the Phoenix Pioneer Cemetery Board and was a board member and past president of the Phoenix Historical Society.

"Mick" was a talented wood-carver of shore birds and waterfowl, gifting many of his carvings to friends.

Michael Wrede is survived by his wife, Nannette, who resides at The Springs at Anna Maria Senior Living Center in Medford, OR.; daughter Cheryl (Tucker) Grigg of Sea Island, Ga.; son Richard (Cheryl) Wrede of Phoenix, OR.; three grandchildren: Michael (Melinda) Popa of St. Simons Island, Ga.; Kacee (Thomas III) Reagan, also of St. Simons Island; Christopher Wrede, of Coos Bay, OR.; and two great-grandsons, Alexander Wrede and Thomas Reagan IV.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, Tom Wrede, of Portland, OR.

The family wishes to thank those who cared for him when he resided in assisted-living at Anna Maria, as well as Jody Dwyer and her At Home Care-Giving team. Also thanked are staff at Kinsington Oak Grove who provided memory care since November, 2022. Special gratitude is extended to nurse Natalie, of Providence Hospice Care, who provided comfort and end-of-life care when his health declined. All were his angels on earth.

Private interment will be at Phoenix Pioneer Cemetery. Arrangements are provided by Hillcrest Mortuary. At Mr. Wrede’s request, there will be no memorial service.
