Hazel Opdahl

7/23/1922 - 2/6/2021

Hazel Fern Opdahl, née Akkerman, passed away on Saturday, February 6 at the home of her daughter Betty Wagar in Medford, Oregon. She was 98.

Hazel was the matriarch of a large and loving family – the mother of Ron Opdahl, Carol McGregor, Gary Opdahl, Joyce Weaver, Steve Opdahl, and Betty Wagar; a grandmother and great-grandmother many times over; and a great-great-grandmother at the time of her passing. She was predeceased by husband Mahlon Lorace (known as "Red") in 2013; by her son Gary the following year; and by her daughter Joyce in early 2021.

Broadly accomplished, Hazel brought her Dutch ancestry (and Mahlon's Norwegian heritage) to the table in the many regional dishes she enjoyed cooking. Along with her husband, she was a skilled outdoorswoman and hunter, and provided much of the family's game in the form of deer and elk. She imparted her skills in the kitchen – from baking to canning – to many of her children and grandchildren; her recipes were collected by her daughter Carol in a bound volume in 2014. A formidable card player, Hazel could often be found enjoying a spirited game with friends or family over cocktails. She adored the Christmas holiday, being surrounded by loved ones and showered with the small gifts she took almost childlike glee in unwrapping.

Due to the current public health crisis, a celebration-of-life gathering for Hazel will be arranged at a future date. In lieu of flowers or gifts at this time, the family asks that those wishing to honor her memory donate to Visiting Angels or Asante Hospice, leading providers of healthcare for the elderly.
